I think I deserve....

...a formal, written apology. Maybe it should even be notarized and framed.

"Why?" you may ask.

Well, growing up, I was not allowed to:
  • Wear too much makeup
  • Go to the mall if I were going to wear pants rather than a skirt
  • Listen to Christian contemporary music--including Sandi Patti, who was too flashy
  • Wear jeans to church on Sunday nights--or Wednesday nights
  • Dance
  • Use playing cards
  • Eat my sandwiches uncut, "like a truck driver"
  • Watch "The Dukes of Hazard", "The A-Team", or "M*A*S*H"
I'm sure there are more things, but you get the picture. So I was surprised on Sunday afternoon when my brother Evan, who still lives at home --on account of the fact that he is only15, asked me to do something I was sure my parents would never allow.

Smirking, I challenged him, "Get Dad on the phone"! (Dad was in Nashville where my baby sister lives. She's not such a baby anymore. In fact, she just had her first little baby this past week!) So, Evan whips out his cell-phone (Yeah, I don't think I would have been allowed to have one of those, either) and puts Dad on speaker-phone: sure enough; Permission granted.

So I complied.

I cut his hair.

Like this:

Like it?

I also think it is worth mentioning that he went to school like this. And you know who helped him get his hair to stay up this morning?
My Mom!
( sound of me humming Twilight Zone music)

Oh, but Mom has a twinge of guilt. She drove Evan to the bus stop and picked him up today so that the neighbors wouldn't see...

Melissa, I can't believe you didn't tell the whole story! :>) This was a discussion that went on for weeks. I left the decision entirely up to Charley, and I was pretty sure that he would never agree to the whole thing. He put some insurmountable (I thought) conditions on his approval. Anyway, it's only a 3-day hairstyle. It will all be buzzed off tomorrow. But seeing him go off to school like this (after getting his teachers to agree to it--part of the approval condition), I did wonder what in the world we had agreed to!!

It's true. I drove him to and from the bus stop. What, for heaven's sakes, would the neighbors think??

And, I told Evan when I was helping him with his hair the first morning, this is the last outrageous thing he need ask us to let him do!! He's had his fling, and this is it!

He wonders why anyone would like a hairstyle like this that requires so much work! Whew!

But it's true--we have mellowed!

With Evan's hair like this I can actually see his face better and I am amazed at how much he looks like Daniel.

Oh phew!
I was thinking that "mellow" had taken on an entirely new dimension!

Too funny! -- "What, for heaven's sakes, would the neighbors think???"

You're such a thoughtful mom, Kathy! How sweet you are to take him to and from the bus stop!
:o)

I admit liking to see his face. It's surprising how I didn't really know what he looked like before! He looked so shaggy.

I agree, he looks like Dan but I kept seeing Warren too.

What's scary is that I showed these picture to Ethan and he didn't think they were strange!

We all mellow as we get older and we realize that life is too short to sweat the small stuff. I can't imagine that God is going to stand at the gates of heaven with a clipboard and ask if we wore pants to church on Wednesday night or ate our sandwich whole. I let the boys wear their hair the way they wanted because sooner or later, THEY decided that they didn't really like it. Mellowing happens to all of us.

I confess, completely shocked...

(But I think he looks more like Dan, too. Maybe you could do Dan's hair next time you see him...)

It's hilarious! Allowing Evan this hairstyle is definitely not fair to you, Melissa :)

I am really laughing tonight! Jess has had his hair really shaggy for awhile, and we kept urging him to trip it up a bit. Steve was never allowed to let his hair touch his ears when he was a kid so he doesn't like to make a big deal of hair length. Today was the last day of school, and Jess and our neighbor boy came home and said, "Can you buzz our hair? All of it?" So Jess doesn't just have a buzz -- he's bald! When you're blond, that's pretty scary! But Evan, you look amazing - - it's fun to do crazy things and it is great to see your handsome face again. Leave him at the bus stop, Kath!!!

Love,

Aunt Susan

I love this post and all that it says. I think he looks sweet, which is the new word these days. Thanks for the visit to my cottage and come back often.
